[ cloud is also not dressed for the desert, but he's not in his regular canon outfit either, so we will give him half a point. i love bunny ears estelle even if it makes cloud tilt his head and stare at her silently for a few seconds in nostalgia. don't @ him.
it's hard to tell, but his hair is feathers. he is a chocobo. thank ]
... Can't say I have. I don't think anyone back home would've tried to build anything out of a snake skeleton.
[ it is maybe not a snake. he is calling it a snake. ]
Me neither! Perhaps, despite the harsh terrain, this location was a middle-point between larger settlements, making it useful as a place of trade?
[They may never know, but she seems to enjoy theorizing about it, anyway. Estelle looks over the wares -- some elaborately-decorated textiles -- with appreciation.] It's too bad we can't take anything back...
[ cloud isn't looking at that but he is looking at pretty weapons. he is stereotypical ]
Right. They all turn into pictures once we get back. Makes you wonder how that works. [ but he looks over at her textile ] What would you even do with that?
[ cloud does not even notice she is doing that because he's suddenly a little ? himself ]
Yeah. I... got it when I made SOLDIER. [ he thinks. maybe. thinking too hard is giving him a headache and he shakes his head ] But I meant because it's the only one that was made to look like that.
[ he sounds more sure of that! it's fine. don't question him too hard. ]
Yeah, well. Realized they weren't worth working for after a while. [ he shrugs a shoulder because now is not sad backstory time and he moves on to walk further through the market ] You said you hadn't left the castle for most of your life, right? You ever even seen a market like this?
No, nothing so big and lively. [Well, lively with shadow-people currently. But that gives a pretty good idea of what this place is supposed to be like.]
I did visit a desert outpost once, while on my journey away from the castle... but it was much smaller.
[Also, the giant skeleton really is a game-changer.]
I've never been to a desert, but there's a big tourist attraction called the Gold Saucer in one. From what I've heard, it's a lot different from a market.
Yeah, kind of. There's roller coasters. [ there are no deadly clowns(?) however. cloud has to think about how to explain chocobos ] They're these... big birds we use for transportation. They can carry a person or pull carriages. Most people who live near or in cities use cars now, but they're still popular.

[ it's pensive and not judgmental tho ]
But they really made it work. I wouldn't have expected a market out here.

[But she'll look at what he's looking at, too!] Oh, they have weapons too? Come to think of it, I've never seen a weapon like yours before...

[ again not judging so much as. huh. i guess that is a thing people would do. but he looks back at his sword when she mentions it ]
The size isn't that unique back home, but this one's one of a kind.
[ he thinks. he has no memory of how he got it! just knows it's important! how weird. ]

Really? Is there something special about it?

Oh, right... So you were in an army before becoming a mercenary?
no subject
The army, yeah. Shinra's. I don't think anyone's left to have a real army to oppose them since the war.
no subject
... I guess that makes sense, with everything you said before. It sounds like it's a good thing you left.

Giant skeleton aside.
