The hostage motive would seem to be enough to get us to kill one another, there wouldn't seem to be a need to bring possession into it. But perhaps the entertainment we are meant to provide is for these shadows themselves, and that is the reason for their involvement.
... Considering they offered the hostage's safety in exchange for possession, could be. It's all a show for them and we're the puppets they get to play with.
